St Croix Valley brighter with Holiday Tour Dec 6th
Over the river and through the woods fifteen inns will be dressed in their holiday splendor Sunday, December 6 in the St. Croix Valley.  The Inns of the Valley are celebrating their first Holiday Tour du Valley from 1:00-5:00 pm. Innkeepers will share holiday traditions that day and guests will enjoy vast differences in style, size, and décor.
From a cottage style one suite inn (The Cottage in Taylors Falls) to a 41 room historic Inn (Water Street Inn in Stillwater) and from a Victorian six suite delight in town (Phipps Inn in Hudson) to a modern with a traditional twist four bedroom charmer in the country (Country Cove in Stillwater)– all are unique. Having a chance to enjoy the geography of the valley is part of this adventure as choices are as far south as Hastings on the Minnesota side (Classic Rosewood Inn) to as far north as St Croix Falls in Wisconsin (Wissahickon Farms Country Inn). Some photo opportunities with snow glistening on icy water include the Afton House in Afton, Kinni Creek in River Falls, Escape by the Lake in Hudson and both Pleasant Lake and St Croix River Inn in Osceola.
Touring inns during the holidays is like paging through Better Homes and Gardens Christmas issue, but here your other senses may be aroused too. The innkeeper’s individuality shines during the holiday season. You may be pleasantly surprised by “Dancing with the Stars” music at Asa Parker House in Marine as the innkeepers also own a dance studio. It is sometimes the ethnic heritage of the innkeeper that prevails in their décor as well.  Enjoy Argentina accents at Outing Lodge in Stillwater, a bit of the Irish at Cover Park Manor also in Stillwater, and a Scandinavia velkommen at Summit Inn in Center City.  Some inns have a tree in every room, and at one stop there is a tree decorated with baby shoes of all decades in what was once this mansion’s nursery.
There are Santa collections at a few inns and an angel collection you won’t want to miss.

Tickets for the Holiday Tour du Valley are $15 each. Call 715-386-0800. The Inns of the Valley span from Hastings to St Croix Falls.  Enjoy this event at a leisurely pace and choose a region of the valley with five or six inns or squeeze in all fifteen. The cost is the same no matter how many you choose to tour. Get a jump on your gift giving and treat yourself, your family or your friends and do the tour in a limo from Cities Limousine (www.citieslimo.com

) They will pick you up and escort you from inn to inn and back again. The cost of their service varies depending on group size and vehicle chosen.
A great holiday bonus is the ticket cost of $15.  This is the discount available for purchasing a $100 gift certificate that day at any one of the inns. Get $15 off each and every $100 gift certificate that day only!  To promote this holiday tour this group of B&Bs are offering a two night package from Dec 1-21 that includes a 25% discount the second night.  Stay at any inn two consecutive nights, and receive 25% of the second night or lower priced night’s room rate.  This offer cannot be combined with any other specials.  Check with a particular inn for complete details.

COCOONING PACKAGEFor those that want or need time away without ANY distractions, to recharge your batteries, our Cocooning Special Package is for you!  Upon check-in you will receive a wine, fruit & cheese basket, followed by a four-course dinner in the privacy of your room or our dining room.  The next morning, we deliver breakfast to your room as well.  You never have to leave!      Add to this you can check in early at 1PM and enjoy a late check-out at 12 Noon the following day.  The cost for our Cocooning Night on weekdays (Sun – Thru) is $159 for a City Side Room and $199 for a Riverside St. Croix Suite, Friday and Saturday nights $189 of City Side and $239 for a Riverside Room.  Not valid on Holidays, subject to availability.

Lorraine Garland  (violin and vocals) and Minnesota geneticist Paul Score (guitar and vocals.) They take on a fine variety of musical styles and territory, along with such subjects as love and death, (often in the same song) and happiness and despair (also often in the same song), with cool melodies and strange lyrics from such diverse songwriters as Neil Gaiman, Jane Yolen, Stephen Merritt, Todd Menton and Emma Bull, with some severely damaged traditional tunes and original songs penned by the band. Fabulous Lorraine rose to fame with her duo the Flash Girls in the mid 90′s, (“the find of the year and perhaps beyond” – Utne Reader).

Paul and Lorraine play Irish music. All sorts of Irish music. And Scottish music, and English music, some original music and a whole lot of songs where people get sent to prison in Australia forever .  Something for everyone.  Lots of Drinking, lots of lots of losing your love forever,  plenty of Death, Doom and Destruction and Happy little nights in the Pub. Not to mention some of the best Irish Fiddle Tunes going. Â
They like to have fun. They like to take requests and will play just about anything, if they know just about half of it. Someday they will learn all the words to Puff the Magic Dragon. (  why this song is so requested in Irish Bars they do not know, but  their audiences seem to love it  and are happy to sing it . At least the first verse. Over and Over.) They will play the Unicorn song for free. Once. If Paul has had enough Whisky. If Paul has to much whisky,  he will play Freebird for you. ( this is sometimes more fun than it sounds. Trust them ) They will play the Irish Washerwomen ( Retitled simply The Irish Song ) at least once a set. ( again, trust them ) Â
Paul plays the Guitar and Sings. Lorraine plays the violin. Or Fiddle.( same thing, folks ) And Sings. They like best the kind of shows where YOU are as much a part of the evening as they are. ( Why should they have to do all the work??? ) They have plenty of things you can sing along to. And plenty of things to sit back with your pint and listen to. Or get wild to. Or even Maudlin. ( Remember all those Australian Prison songs??? Sad stuff! ) Â
Nights in the Pub with Paul and Lorraine are a lot like sitting in your living room with a group of old friends.   A few pints, a sip of whisky, lots of laughter and good music. Mostly Paul and Lorraine like to have fun. And they would like you to be there. Wherever they are.Â

Barry Nelson
Born in Belfast Co. Antrim Ireland. Barry has been playing music since his early teens performing in Ireland, England, Denmark, and Sweden currently based in Virginia U.S.A. He has crisscrossed the U.S.A. many times from Cape Cod to Florida, Maryland to Minnesota. He has played with Coribb Folk, Pennywhistle, and as a solo artist for the former Irish Prime Minster Albert Reynolds and President Ronald Regan. He is never short of a toast, song or story so come listen sing and party with Barry Nelson. This is a “don’t miss” show so come in and catch Barry and a special guest at work, call it that work or not it’s a lot of fun to watch listen and sing a long. Barry often plays in the Twin Cities with Brendan Sheridan (accordian, tin whistle, 5-string banjo guitar, vocals): Brendan has a great command of all the instruments he plays as well as having a wonderful old style voice that brings out the best in his large repertoire of songs. Brendan has a fun collection of songs and tunes from the classic Pericy French songs from his own part of Ireland to a bunch of very nice “old time” American classics too. Otherwise Barry plays with a large variety of local musicians when he comes to town either way this is a “don’t miss” show so come in and catch Barry and his friends at work,… if we dare call it that. Work or not it’s a lot of fun to watch listen and sing a long.

Â
Five Course Macallan and Highland Park Dinner
Featuring Remy Cointreau Representative
Tom Kingsley
September 24, 2009
Historic Water Street Inn
Â
6 P.M.  SOCIAL HOUR:
BUTLER PASSED HORS D’OEUVRES
~ Served with Macallan 12 year ~
Macallan 12 Yr Old has hints of sweet cream and vanilla due to aging in used sherry casks from Spain. The Macallan is one of the oldest Scotch names dating back over 300 years in the Speyside region.
Â
7 P.M.  START WITH:
Tea-Smoked Duck Breast
on Crostini with Blueberry Jus.
~ Served with Macallan Cask Strength ~
This one is cask strength, which means it was not diluted with water before being bottled, as most whiskies are. Thus, while most Scotches are 40-46% alc/vol, this big guy weighs in at a hefty
58.6% (116 proof)
Â
Soup
Curried Carrot with Roasted Red Peppers
~ Served with Highland Park 12 year~
The most northerly Scotch whisky distillery in the world, Orkney is a land full of mystery with the wind, rain, crushing waves and hail providing the perfect setting for the home of one of the world best single malt whiskies. Highland Park 12 was first introduced to Charlie’s Irish Pub in April 2007 after A.J. came back from a week long trip to Scotland raving about this fine single malt. Chuck agreed to add it to our Scotch selection and it has been one of our best selling single malts ever since.
Â
Blackened Ribeye Medallions
with sautéed Bacon & Brussel Sprouts and Brandy Sweet Potato Gratin
~ Served with Highland Park 18 year ~
Highland Park 18 Year Old is an exceptionally fine whisky that builds on the world-class reputation already enjoyed by the 12 Year Old. All the Orcadian hallmarks of Highland Park are here – the smokiness, the peat, the heather-honey – plus it has gained a glorious richness and spiciness through its longer cask maturation.
Â
Chocolate Hazelnut Torte with Butterscotch Ice Cream
~ Served with Naked Grouse~
Naked Grouse deviates most significantly from Famous Grouse because of the type of barrels used. Sixty-Seventy percent of the flavor in Scotch is from the wood. Famous Grouse uses American oak bourbon casks, while Naked Grouse uses European oak sherry casks from Spain.
Â
$69.95 per person includes dinner, scotches and two hand rolled cigars.  Space is limited, reservations required
