Veterans Day in Stillwater

November 2nd, 2012 by chuck

FREE MEALS FOR VETERANS AT LEO’S IN STILLWATER on NOVEMBER 11, 2012

(Stillwater, MN, November 1, 2012) — For the fifth consecutive year, Leo’s Grill & Malt Shop, 131 Main St. S. in historic downtown Stillwater,  will honor Veterans and active-duty service personnel with a free meal on Veterans Day, Sunday, November 11 from 11AM-8PM.  This year, Leo’s hopes to serve free meals to over 600 Veterans because of the unique opportunity presented by the Stillwater Lift Bridge closure.

“We asked and received permission to set up a large heated tent on Chestnut Street which will allow us the privilege to serve many more Veterans this year,” said restaurant co-owner Cory Buettner.  “The restaurant normally seats 50 people, and we will be able to seat another 100 people under the tent.”  Leo’s Grill & Malt Shop is named for Cory’s late father, Leo, a Veteran of World War II.

Inside Leo’s, Veterans can order anything from the normal menu.  Under the tent, the menu will be simplified, yet include classic burgers, fries and malts along with a blue plate turkey dinner.  No proof of Military service is required to receive a free meal.  “Some Veterans will offer their papers, but it is not necessary.  We take them on their honor,” said co-owner Naashom Buettner.

“In years past, we have spoken with some Veterans who returned from war and did not get the welcome home they deserved,”  said Buettner. “It is a privilege and honor to welcome the Veterans to our restaurant.  In the past we have served as many as 200 free meals, we hope to triple that this year.”

Another tradition will continue at 11:11 a.m. as local Veterans proceed from the Stillwater American Legion Post 48 through downtown Stillwater ending at the corner of Main St. and Chestnut, near the restaurant.  The Stillwater Police will halt traffic and the Color Guard will perform their traditional ceremony including a bugler performing “Taps”, a short prayer and a 21-gun salute.  The Washington County Historical Society will have an exhibit and a Stillwater Eagle Scout troop will display their collection of 13 different U.S. flags.   Water Street Inn, 101 Water Street, one block from Leo’s,  is offering Veterans overnight accommodatins for $11.11 on Sunday evening, November 11th.   Reservations may be made by calling 651-439-6000.    Volunteers helping at Leo’s is coordinated by Stillwater Beyond the Yellow Ribbon.

The Buettner’s welcome Wisconsin Veterans to join them,  and while the Stillwater Lift Bridge is closed for construction until mid-December,  hope they will remember to cross the river at I94 or in Osceola.

Ian Gould this weekend in the Pub

September 19th, 2012 by chuck

Musician Ian Gould wryly warns his audiences, “If Irish eyes are smiling, you better watch your step!” A guitarist and singer from Belfast, Northern Ireland, Ian today shares Irish wit and his striking voice with American audiences. “Americans say I speak with a thick brogue,” Ian deadpans. “But I don’t hear a thick accent. In Ireland, brogues are just shoes.” Besides humor, Ian’s shows share pub spirit and conjure images of Ireland. Blending traditional Irish songs—everything from “Back Home in Derry” to “My Wild Irish Rose”—with contemporary music—from the Beatles to U2—Ian reminds audiences that “the only thing better than singing is more singing.”

SOCIAL HOUR:

BUTLER PASSED HORS D’OEUVRES

Balvenie 17 Year Peated Cask

In 2001, a heavily peated batch of barley was distilled at The Balvenie Distillery and was allowed to mature until The Balvenie Malt Master, David Stewart, decided it was time to rejuvenate the maturation process and so the whisky was transferred to newly prepared traditional casks. The casks that had originally held the peated liquid had taken on much of its character and so David decided to experiment by filling them with 17 year old Balvenie for a short period. The result was an intensely peaty whisky. Marrying this liquid with 17 year old Balvenie finished in new American oak casks produced The Balvenie Peated Cask, a complex single malt that is rich and spicy with layers of smokiness.

7 pm

START WITH:

APPETIZER

Rolled Flank Steak with Roasted Red Peppers and Spinach over Cheesy Grits with aWhiskey Plum Sauce

  Balvenie 12 Year Signature

The Balvenie Signature Aged 12 Years is a classic marriage of The Balvenie matured in the three most traditional cask types, first fill bourbon, refill bourbon and sherry. It has a unique character of honey, spice and subtle oak and each batch is allowed time to harmonise in a traditional marrying tun.

SALAD

Shrimp Salad with Grilled Pineapple, Roasted Beets and a Orange-Basil Dressing

Balvenie 15 Year Single Cask

The Balvenie Single Barrel is a 15 year old single malt which is drawn from a single traditional oak whisky cask of a single distillation. Whilst each cask is subtly different, The Balvenie Malt Master selects only those casks which have the essential characteristics of The Balvenie Single Barrel, particularly honey, vanilla and oaky notes. Each bottling forms a limited edition of no more than 350 hand-numbered bottles – so each bottle is unique and unrepeatable.

ENTRÉE

Veal Chop Provencal over Tri-Color Couscous with Whiskey Laced Dried Fruit andGrilled Zucchini

Balvenie 12 Year Double Wood

The Balvenie DoubleWood is a 12 year old single malt which gains its distinctive character from being matured in two woods. Over its period of maturation it is transferred from a traditional oak whisky cask to a first fill European oak sherry cask. Each stage lends different qualities to the resulting single malt ~ the traditional casks soften and add character, whilst the sherry wood brings depth and fullness of flavour.

DESSERT

Chocolate Trifle with Fudge Pound Cake, Whiskey Spiked Sabayon,

Mixed Berries and Shaved White Chocolate

Balvenie 14 Year Caribbean Cask

After a 14 year maturation period in traditional oak whisky casks, the Balvenie is then transferred to the rum casks, leading to an exceptional Single Malt that exemplifies the signature smooth, honeyed character of the Balvenie, while adding unique notes of toffee and fruit that come from its innovative cask finish.

$74.95 per person ~ includes 2 Hand-Rolled Cigars

Bedlam this weekend at the Inn

August 29th, 2012 by chuck

Bedlam

Bedlam is a band born out of the talent pool of the MN Renaissance Festival. Over the years the band has had a diverse sound and many different members. Its recent incarnation is a folk band with a hippie attitude. Many familiar songs with a different slant along with some original material as well. Paul Regge is adept at lead guitar, Mandolin and the Concertina he also adds his vocal harmonies and laugh to the mix. John Sjogren is one of the founders of Bedlam he is also a member of the popular local Irish group The Tim Malloys. Mark is a virtuoso on the bass guitar his beautiful voice also lends to the groups great sound along with his impressive song writing talents. As the name implies a stage with this group on it is not a very stable one and you never know who may show up and sit in on a set.
